It’s color is grey,
Consistency thick.
Once you pour it,
you best adore it,
Cause it’s here to stay.
The smooth liquid flow
Churns a mighty swell
Inside a deep well
Where strong sailors sail
And no breeze will blow
It withstands the rain,
Sleet, hail, snow, and wind.
It won’t melt or bend
In summers red flame
Or winters cold strain.
In the early light
Of the sweet blue ‘morn
A new day just born—
That’s the time you pour
A foundation just right
This substance you say,
Seems useful and good
It’s better than wood
And might even could
Pave a whole new way
You’d think that you want
Cement for your shed
As well as your bed.
But it must be said,
Your dreams it would haunt.
Because it’s unbending
Like steel pipes in stone
Or cold winter’s bone.
You’d just toss and moan
A nightmare unending.
So take my advice
And pour it for stairs
Or headstones for prayers.
It will outlast you
Even if you live twice
